Mentor Interview

I have been privileged in being able to interview Jami Wilson. She has been a Registered Nurse in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma for the past 12 years.

Q: WHAT ARE SOME BENEFITS OF BEING IN THE MEDICAL PROFESSION?

     AThere is a feeling like you're making an impact on the health of people. It is a positive feeling.

Q: WHAT ARE SOME DOWNFALLS OF WORKING IN THE MEDICAL FIELD?

     A: There are many exposures to disease. Also, it can get tiring, working shifts that are 12 hours or more.

Q: IS THERE ANYTHING THAT COULD BE IMPROVED IN THE MEDICAL FIELD?

     A: There can be an improvement in sharing medical information when needed.

          Q: AS IN PEOPLE DO NOT SHARE ENOUGH WHEN NEEDED?

               A: No, a better and faster system to get records to other doctors or people who need access would be an improvement.

Q: WHAT ARE SOME SKILLS NECESSARY TO BE A SUCCESSFUL NURSE?

     A: First, there is learning how to do a nursing assessment which includes taking vital signs, knowledge of some drugs, dosage, use, and side effects or adverse effects. Computer skills and charting patient responses to treatment is also necessary, as well as, good observation skills and understatement of cues.

Q: WHAT IS ONE THING YOU WISH YOU KNEW WHEN YOU FIRST STARTING NURSING?

     A: I wish I had started my career decades earlier because I could have learned so many things by now.
